Garden designer for Kent and the South-East

About me

Garden design has always fascinated me. I’ve often wondered why many of us spend a lot of time and money inside our houses but often leave the outside space as we found it or with a few tweaks but essentially, it takes a back seat.

My own garden was professionally designed when we built our house and friends that have never considered the concept of using proper design surprise me with their enthusiasm for it – without necessarily understanding why they love it so much. I think it’s rather that they feel it. To me, that’s what good garden design is; a play on the senses and a feeling of joy at just being in the space.

My experience

I genuinely believe our outdoor spaces can enhance our lives and the way we feel. Ten years ago I made a plan to study Garden design at the highest level I could and finally after many years in finance I have graduated from Inchbald School of Design as a garden designer.

I have been trained to design a concept for an outdoor space and can offer further services too, however you may not want all of these.

Using a garden designer can mean many things as it is a bespoke service. It could be a consultation or planting redesign or a full project consisting of a Master Plan,  Detailed working drawings for a Landscape contractor, Planting plans and schemes and project management

Why design?

We’re not usually aware of it but we’re subconsciously looking for symmetry and harmony in outdoor spaces.

A view with nothing for the eye to pause upon can be overwhelming, just as a cluttered, disorganised space can feel claustrophobic. Too much to take in, or not enough.

Design should bring order and focal points, as well as contrast. This means we notice the beauty of the individual features because they have a visual relationship with each other. It is the same principal for good architecture and Art.

Think of your garden as an extension of your home. Something that can be renovated and redesigned.

What does it cost?

The designer’s fees are usually a relatively small proportion of the cost of a redesigned garden and will depend on how much of a service you require. The overall cost depends more on the scope and complexity of your project and the materials you choose for hard landscaping you choose, for example. There are many variables, but the design process will accommodate your preferences and find ways to deliver the concept to meet and hopefully exceed your expectations at a cost you are comfortable with.
